Here is the essence of my writing approach: You use your real-life stories to illustrate or demonstrate one of your defining qualities, characteristics or core values in your college application essay or individual statement.

You have to continue to explain exactly what those stories designed to you, that which you learned.

This is your chance to display exactly what colleges and others call ‘intellectual vitality.’ That is just a fancy way to say how you think and learn, and that which you worth.

All the students I work with catch on quickly to the concept of using a real-life story inside their essay. But many have trouble when it comes to moving to the next step of describing exactly what it designed to them. They often stumble when it comes to ‘digging deeper’ inside their essay, and building their tips and insights.

One common pitfall that i have seen may be the propensity toward black-and-white thinking, especially when analyzing, reflecting and sharing their viewpoint.

Black-and-white thinking is when every thing has to be all one way or even the other, instead of somewhere in the middle. Better known as the gray areas ( that which you get when you blend black and white).With so much cycling on these essays, there is a strange force on students to seem knowledgable and self-assured. As a result, I believe many feel that they need to draw absolute conclusions in their essays. Or make concrete, all-knowing statements.

My advice is to try to resist that force to ensure, to feel that there is just one means or rule.

Here is the irony of black and white thinking: Even though that ‘I got this’ certainty can make you feel confident and smart, it frequently reveals the opposite.

The fact is always in the gray.

There is nothing all good or all bad.

This ambiguity makes those who stick to black-and-white thinking uncomfortable. They choose labels, generalities, extremes and experience in control. (Anyone come to mind?)

On paper about ourselves, revealing doubt and vulnerability could possibly be the most effective way to connect with other people. As well as demonstrate true inner energy and integrity.

Embracing the gray of life the uncertain, the obscure, the abstract is often considered higher level thinking.

And guess who loves to observe that?

Yup! College and universities.

While you are writing your essay, look for the gray.

I warn them they need not have experienced solved that problem to create a significant essay about it. In fact, this is an chance to explore the gray in your life.

Share the steps you took to manage the problem, and exactly how you thought, thought and learned on the way.

You don’t have to put it up with a big red bow, as in ‘problem solved forever.’

Because life is not usually that way. It is complicated. Messy. Gray.

Whenever you share what you learned, you don’t have to have learned that ‘everything’ is one means, or ‘all good’ or ‘all bad.’

It is fine not to be sure of anything.

You can still share and assert that which you think, and exactly how you are feeling, and exactly what steps you took in working with the problem.

Remember, true confidence is understanding that which you have no idea. This humility also shows that you stay open and eager to mastering more. (Guess once again who likes to observe that?)

Here are some ways to go gray in your essay:

Look out for ‘absolute words’ that flag black-and-white statements: (All, always, everyone, everyone, each, nobody, none.)

Include open-ended questions. ‘Occasionally I wondered: ‘‘Why I became created with this unusual power to sense just how other people are feeling?”

Share that which you have no idea. ‘ I became able to determine the first part of coding equation, but I thought blindsided by the remainder of it.’

Confess your missteps or regrets. ‘Looking right back, I now see that I should have called law enforcement the first time my father drove us house from the ball game drunk on a lot of beers.’

Explore both sides to a viewpoint. ‘ In a few ways, I love my ability to discover quickly, but frequently I observe that I getting going so quickly that I forget to delve deeper into things.’

If you follow my narrative approach to writing these essays, you will be showcasing a defining quality or characteristic, or perhaps a core worth. One method to ‘go gray’ would be to examine and assess that quality or characteristic, and include both ‘the good’ and ‘the bad’ about this.

Here is a good example: The product quality is ‘stubborn.’

‘All my life i have had a stubborn streak. Looking right back, I observe that my opposition to trying anything brand new or doing the things I’m asked has cost me personally significantly. I’ve missed out on some unique possibilities, and I can never get those right back. At exactly the same time, i really believe occasionally it’s important to dig in my heels, hold my ground and channel my inner donkey…It will depend on why I baulk and resist, or offer in.’

Do you see that the publisher is not saying that being stubborn is ‘all good’ or ‘all bad?’ alternatively, it just depends. It is relative to other factors. It is gray.

The capability to see the gray in the world, and never be threatened by the unknowing, shows humility and trust.

Those who grapple utilizing the gray reveal by themselves as open-minded people; truth seekers.

I have discussed just how effective college application essays usually make the publisher ‘likable.’

I’m perhaps not speaking about popularity or kissing up to the admissions officers.

It’s more about allowing them to see how you believe and feel in your essay, and having the confidence to incorporate aspects about yourself that aren’t 100 percent positive or particular.

This is what makes us ‘likable’ because we run into as self-effacing and open to mastering more.

I know there is so much force on these essays to wow admissions officers, and several students assume they need to be impressive and self-assured.
